Nomad

Welcome to the Nomad Website

In this site, you'll find information about Nomad, its background, aims and objectives, company members, previous work and forthcoming productions.

Background

Nomad emerged in April 2001 in Glasgow, Scotland, to create a blend of collaborative original work and exciting performances of established playwrights.

Nomad's first production was Spoonface Steinberg at the Edinburgh Festival 2001, where it played to a sell out audience and received great critical success.

"Spine-tingling" - The Herald

"Heart-warming...sparks of beauty" **** The Scotsman

Nomad has gone on to create its first truly collaborative theatre piece, mixing performance, music, propaganda, song and remembrance in its production of The Dawn, at The Arches in April 2002.

Collaborating with writer Gordon Hunt, composer Oliver Searle, designer Carrie Southall (Artistic Associate) and lighting designer Sergey Jakovsky - The Dawn honoured the men of the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders who fell in the Great War, whilst reminding people that those men were just as human as we are.

The piece was well received by the public.

"Transfixing, powerful, immaculate... A stunning new company whose talents should not be overlooked." - The Edinburgh Guide April 2002

Through October/November 2002, Nomad produced the Scottish professional premiere of Spoonface Steinberg, after Artistic Director Mark Westbrook was awarded an Arts Trust of Scotland Award. The production opened with a nine performance sell out run at Tron Theatre and followed up with performances in Irvine, Ullapool and East Kilbride.

The papers said:

“Unpretentious…Superb…. Distinctly Scottish…..Unmissable”
**** Mark Brown – The Scotsman – 23rd October 2002

“Throat-catching…faces up to reality without flinching…..intelligence at work”
Keith Bruce – The Herald – 21st October 2002

In 2003, Nomad are currently planning their work-in-progress production of A Map of the Heart, a new devised drama about a father and son Karaoke team, working the pubs and clubs of Scotland.

It is also currently in the planning phase of making a short film, currently titled WONDERLAND, it is written by Mark Westbrook and we are lucky to be working with Director of Photography Jake Jackson.

Artistic Director Mark Westbrook is currently on secondment to Birds of Paradise Theatre Company but will return to Nomad in April 2003. His work for BOP can be seen from March 17th to 29th on BOP's tour of Rescuers Speaking. Carrie Southall is currently working for TPT in Tokyo, Japan.
